Why Your Hair is Still Dry Even When You Drench It in Oil

Warna Haircare

Have you ever slathered your hair in heavy oils, only for it to sit on top of your strands looking greasy while the ends still feel like rough, dry straw? It is a frustrating cycle, and it usually makes us think our hair is just “damaged beyond repair.”

Here is the secret: you are likely confusing hydration with moisture. Hydration refers to the actual water content inside your hair strands. When your hair lacks hydration, it feels rough, looks stiff and dull, and breaks easily. On the other hand, moisture refers to how well your hair can hold onto that water by sealing it in so it doesn’t evaporate.

If your hair is dehydrated, putting oil on it won’t fix the problem. Oil is a sealant—it locks moisture in, but it cannot hydrate your hair on its own. To fix this, you need to understand your hair’s porosity, which is your hair’s ability to absorb and retain moisture. You can easily find out your porosity by doing the “Float Test” with a glass of water.

However, before you can truly hydrate your hair or test its true porosity, you must clear away the stubborn product buildup on your scalp and strands. If your hair is coated in old silicones and sebum, water can’t get in! This is why you need a pre-shampoo treatment like the Warna Scalp Treatment. By applying it before you shower, you gently exfoliate your scalp and remove the buildup. Once your canvas is clean, your hydrating shampoos and leave-in conditioners can actually do their jobs.
